Bugle Prizes Increase.

The increased entries and audience support in recent years at The West of England Bandsman's Festival have resulted in a stronger financial position for the Festival and the Committee has repaid this support by investing in improved facilities for both bands and audiences at this unique open-air contest. The Organiser, Andrew Teague, told me that their main aim was to ensure that despite making changes to bring the Contest into the 21st Century the spirit and traditions of the Festival, founded in 1912, were kept intact.

This year's record entry saw eighteen Bands marching proudly through the village of Bugle to the Contest Field and to reward the support of the Bands who enter from such a wide area the organisers have made a large increase in the Prize Money awarded. This is of course in addition to the magnificent range of Trophies on offer, which includes The Royal Trophy, presented to the Festival in 1913 by the then Prince of Wales and which is still the only Royal Trophy awarded at a Brass Band Contest anywhere in the World.

The Prize Money next year will total almost £4500 with the winners of The Championship Section being able to collect a Cheque for £1000, the highest cash prize in the West of England at a set test piece contest. Others Sections have not been neglected with a First Prize in the First Section of £500, Second Section £250 and Third, Fourth and Youth Section Winners £150. Those coming in Second and Third places will also benefit and with the attractive Test Pieces just announced for next year's Festival on June 17th there is sure to be a large entry.

The Championship Section has been set, The Year of The Dragon by Philip Sparke and the hymn Love Devine arranged by Philip Wilby. First Section Bands have Music for The Common Man by Kenneth Downie and the march Viva Birkinshaw by William Rimmer. In the Second Section it is Diamond Heritage by Darrol Barry and the hymn tune Poldice by Monty Pearce. Just one piece for the Third Section which is Northern Landscapes by Peter Graham and for the Fourth Section, Partita by Edward Gregson. The Youth Section also tackle a piece by Philip Sparke, Kaleidoscope.

Adjudicating for the first time at Bugle will be David Horsfield with the Deportment once again in the experienced hands of Gareth Roberts MBE. Full details and schedules are now available from Andrew Teague on 01726 815662 and for listeners it is not too early to make sure this essential Brass Band date is in your 2006 Diary.
