Steve Sykes

We are delighted to announce that Steve Sykes has agreed to adjudicate at our 2023 contest to be held at Molinnis Park, Bugle on Saturday 17th June.

From his first contest in the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall in 1971 at the age of thirteen, to being section leader of the 2008 European Champion and 2009 British Open Champion band Steve Sykes has been involved in brass banding at it’s highest level. It can truly be said that in this genre he began a new wave of musicality and technical virtuosity in tuba playing and revolutionised the instrument as a solo voice in the brass band. A busy 2008 saw Steve performing in fifteen countries – working with brass bands, symphonic bands and orchestras and was invited to adjudicate at six National Finals throughout the band world. In 2009 Steve has adjudicated at high ranking contest such as The English Nationals, The Cambridge Masters International, The World Music Contest (Kerkrade), the National Finals of Sweden, the National Finals of the Netherlands and the Championship Section of the Yorkshire Regional Contest. Apart from being one of the UK’s most popular and entertaining brass soloists he also has a successful conducting career and has directed bands in all major competitions including the British Open, National and European Championships and is a guest conductor with the world’s number 1 ranked band – Cory. Away from his performing schedule Steve is active as a visiting instrumental professor at HM Royal Marines Band (tutoring all brass instruments) and has been tuba tutor to the National Youth Band of Great Britain, Wales, Switzerland and Sweden. He is low brass tutor at Bristol University. Steve’s latest solo CD ‘Basso Bravissimo’ (Egon CD SFZ138) has won critical acclaim and received nominations for ‘Best Solo CD of the Year’ from 4barsrest and The Mouthpiece.com.
